Thirty-three successful candidates for Naval Cadetships entered the January 1870 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia following a competitive entrance examination. This list is probably in descending order of merit, as was the custom in such reporting.[1]

Whereas it had previously been the practice for The Times to include information about schools which had prepared the cadets for examination, this source article and the others of the 1870s (until when?) did not mention the prior schooling of the successful candidates.

The following two terms under the old scheme were sent straight to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
