Forty candidates were selected as naval cadets following several days of examination commencing on 25 November, 1885. Their examination scores were as follows.[1]
The prior education noted for some of the men is obtained from classified ads in various issues of the Hampshire Telegraph and Naval Chronicle, e.g. 18 Jun 1887, p. 3, 3 Dec 1887, p. 4 and 25 Aug 1888, p. 4.
