E 35, E 38, G 8 and F 3 have joined, keeping the strength otherwise as before: four depot ships, three destroyers and thirty-three submarines.[39][40]

Finally, the weight of the formation was such that it has sloughed off most of its vessels, reducing itself to eleven submarines accommodated by Alecto. The primary beneficiary of this calving has been the reinvigorated Ninth Submarine Flotilla, which will remain alongside the Eighth in the Harwich Force: it gets all the surface ships except Alecto as well as the "E" class submarines E 23, E 29, E 31, E 35, E 37, E 38, E 42, E 53, E 54 and E 55. E 4 would arrive in the Ninth in October, and E 41 in December, while E 1, E 8, E 9 and E 19 would be listed as being in "Home Waters or on Detached Service" that same month. E 16 ill just disappear, as she was mined on 22 August.

D 3 and D 4 have been sent to join the Third Submarine Flotilla, and G 8, G 11 and G 12 have been sent to the Tenth Submarine Flotilla.[41][42][43]
