Mediterranean Submarine Flotilla

The Mediterranean Submarine Flotilla was a small formation of submarines of the Royal Navy.

History

1 June, 1914

Though they would not be clearly labelled as a "Flotilla" until September, three "B" class coastal submarines are first listed under the Mediterranean Fleet in the June Supplement, having apparently been assigned some time in May. This modest strength would change some time in January, 1915.[1]

1 March, 1915

Two more "B" boats and AE 2 have joined, bringing the strength to six small submarines.[2]

1 April, 1915

B 7 and three "E" class submarines have joined, bringing the strength to seven coastal submarines and three more capable patrol submarines. This roster would apply until some time in May.[3]

June, 1915

E 15 and AE 2 have been reluctantly removed after being lost on 15 and 30 April, respectively. Meanwhile, E 7 and E 12 have joined, making six coastal submarines and four patrol submarines.[4]

1 July, 1915

E 2 has joined along with four "H" class submarines and a depot ship, making a depot ship, six coastal submarines and nine patrol submarines. This roster would change some time in August.[5]

E 20 has joined, bringing the strength to a depot ship, six coastal submarines and ten patrol submarines. This roster would change some time in X.[6]

B 7, B 8 and B 9 have left to join the British Adriatic Squadron, reducing the strength to a depot ship, three coastal submarines and ten patrol submarines.[7]

The remaining "B" class submarines have now also left to join the British Adriatic Squadron, reducing the strength to a depot ship and ten patrol submarines. This roster would change some time in X.[8]

December, 1915

E 7 was sunk in the Dardanelles on 5 September and E 20 on 5 November. These losses have been made good by the arrival of E 21 and E 25, maintaining a strength of one depot ship and ten patrol submarines. This roster would change some time in January.[9]

E 12, E 14 H 1 and H 4 have all been sent to join the British Adriatic Squadron, leaving a strength of one depot ship and six patrol submarines. This roster would change some time in X.[10]

H 3 has also been sent to join the British Adriatic Squadron, leaving a strength of one depot ship and five patrol submarines. This roster would change some time in April.[11]

1 May, 1916

H 2 has finally also been sent to join the British Adriatic Squadron while E 12 and E 14 have returned, leaving a strength here of one depot ship and six patrol submarines. This roster would prove quite stable, and would not change until some time in November, 1917.[12]

1 December, 1917

After a year and a half of stability, E 2 and E 12 have left to join the British Aegean Squadron, leaving a strength here of one depot ship and four patrol submarines.[13]

1 January, 1918

The flotilla is no longer listed by name in the Supplement to the Monthly Navy List, and its vessels have all moved to join the British Adriatic Force.[14]
