U.S.S. Reuben James was one of one hundred and fifty-six Clemson Class destroyers completed for the U.S. Navy. She became the first U.S. Navy warship sunk during the Second World War.

Reuben James was launched on 4 October, 1919 and commissioned on 24 September, 1920 with Commander Gordon W. Haines in command.
