U.S.S. Melvin was one of one hundred and fifty-six Clemson Class destroyers completed for the U.S. Navy.
Construction
Melvin was laid down at Bethlehem Steel's San Francisco shipyard (formerly Union Iron Works) on 15 September, 1920 and was launched on 11 April, 1921. Practically complete at launching, she was commissioned just over a month later.
Service
Melvin was commissioned on 31 May, 1921 with Lieutenant Commander Charles E. Rosendahl in command.
Melvin decommissioned on 8 May, 1930 and was stricken on 3 November, 1930. She was sold for breaking up shortly afterwards.
