Battle of Jutland

Main article: Thirteenth D.F. (Royal Navy) at the Battle of Jutland

Ten destroyers of the Thirteenth under the lead of the light cruiser Champion screened the First Battle Cruiser Squadron during the battle, bolstered by two destroyers temporarily detached from the Tenth Destroyer Flotilla. Eight of these vessels delivered a torpedo attack against the enemy battle cruisers at about 4.15pm, after gun and torpedo battle with enemy destroyers who were similarly tasked.

They were organised as follows:[19][20]

At the same time, Nepean remained in harbour and Paladin, Negro, Nereus, Penn and Penn were in dockyard hands.[21]

June, 1916

Nestor and Nomad have been removed, owing to their loss at Jutland. Ophelia has left to join the Fourteenth Destroyer Flotilla and Partridge has disappeared, to appear in the Fourteenth in July.

Gabriel joins as a flotilla leader, as well as new destroyers Negro, Paladin, Penn, Petard and Pigeon.

A flotilla torpedo attack exercise conducted on the 22nd suggests that the flotilla was organized in many divisions, as the Second a Seventh Divisions attacked the British battle cruisers Tiger, Lion and Princess Royal as Tiger conducted a special firing exercise against squadron mates Repulse and Renown. Champion, then stationed off Lion's port bow at 29,000 yards, hoisted "AU 1" to order the attack against Tiger. The meaning of the signal "AU #" is not explained, but perhaps is the same as the "BE #" orders outlined in the Grand Fleet Battle Orders, H.F. 0034/39 — an attack by all four divisions, approaching in two groups, each of two divisions with a gap separating their divisions. In this case, there were eight destroyers, and their torpedoes were fired from 10,000 yards when the enemy formation was inclined 142 degrees to the left. Tiger suffered one certain hit, and she and Lion also suffered a probable hit despite having turned four points away during the time of flight. The torpedoes achieved an overrun of 6,000 yards — a turn of fully 7.5 points away at the time of firing would have been necessary to outrun the torpedoes.[52][53]

July, 1918

Valkyrie is no longer paid off, but Gabriel left to lead the slow division of the Twentieth Destroyer Flotilla.

The new destroyer Woolston has joined.

Shockingly, Woolwich has left to work with the Third Destroyer Flotilla and the Thirteenth's destroyers are now all tenders to Columbine.

Flotilla strength was a cruiser, two flotilla leaders, twenty-eight destroyers.[54]

November, 1918

The Thirteenth's destroyers remain tenders to Columbine.

After so many months of constant change, this roster lasted until March, 1919.[60]

March, 1919

The massive post-war reorganization of the destroyer flotillas eradicated the Thirteenth and sent its assets to various new purposes.[61][62]

Flotilla is Dis-established

Champion has been relegated to "Miscellaneous" status in port, and in April would wind up in Rosyth.

Fifth Destroyer Flotilla would grab the the seven "R" class destroyers.

The new Second Destroyer Flotilla has taken up flotilla leader Valentine as well as destroyers Vectis, Vega, Venetia, Verulam, Vesper, Vidette, Vimiera, Violent, Walpole Wessex, Westcott, Westminster, Winchelsea, Windsor and Wolfhound.

Third Destroyer Flotilla has snared flotilla leader Valkyrie and destroyers Vendetta, Verdun, Viceroy, Wakeful, Whitley and Woolston.

Drill and Practice

In 1916, sixty-six test runs of the flotilla's 21-in Mark II torpedos in the first half of that year proved 77% probable to endanger the enemy.[63]
