Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 28 February, 1934.[11]

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 5 November, 1937. After a stint as Acting Commander-in-Chief, China in lieu of the ailing Sir Charles James Colebrooke Little, Crabbe was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 17 June, 1938 and in October was appointed Naval Officer in Charge, Liverpool.

On 28 July, 1941, he was appointed to the Liverpool Convoy Pool as Commodore, Second Class R.N.R.. He served in convoy operations until being dispersed in July 1945 and eventually reverted to the Retired List on 14 August, 1945.[12]
