Admiral SIR Henry Daniel Pridham-Wippell, C.B., C.V.O., K.C.B. (12 August, 1985 – 2 April, 1952) was an officer in the Royal Navy who served in both World Wars.

Life & Career

Born the son of a barrister in Bromley, Kent, Pridham-Wippell gained two and a half months on passing out of Britannia in September, 1901.[1]

Pridham-Wippell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1907.[2]

Pridham-Wippell was appointed in command of the destroyer Porcupine on 5 April, 1912.[3]

Pridham-Wippell was appointed to Audacious on 1 October, 1913.[4]

Great War

Pridham-Wippell survived the mining loss of Audacious on 27 October, 1914. On 25 December, he was appointed in command of a ship whose name is illegible, though it appears similar to "Bushaid".[5]

Pridham-Wippell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1915.[6]

On 20 June, 1918, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Tribune.[7]

Post-War

Pridham-Wippell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.[8]

Pridham-Wippell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1926.[9]

Pridham-Wippell was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cairo and given the rank of Commodore, Second Class for command of the Home Fleet Destroyer Flotillas. He maintained command of the flotillas when his command moved to the new Aurora on 9 November, 1937.

Pridham-Wippell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 January, 1938 and subsequently superseded in command of Aurora and the destroyer formations on 20 April.[10]

World War II

Pridham-Wippell was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 3 January, 1941. In late March, he commanded formation of four light cruisers and three destroyers at the Battle of Cape Matapan. Late in 1941, he was fortunate to survive the sinking of Barham and was awarded the K.C.B. for gallantry and conspicuous services in the withdrawal of British forces from Greece.[11]

Pridham-Wippell was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 30 June, 1944.[12]

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 4 February, 1948.
