Captain Edward McConnell Wyndham Lawrie, D.S.O. (11 February, 1882 – 29 June, 1933) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Lahore, India, son of a tea planter named W. G. Lawrie, Lawrie underwent examinations for several days commencing on 20 July, 1897 and gained entrance to the Britannia term of August, 1897, his 1104 marks placing him sixty-first in merit among the sixty-three candidates accepted as naval cadets.[1]

He gained four months on passing out of Britannia on 15 January, 1899, and was first appointed to Anson in the Mediterranean and then to Goliath on the China Station on 27 March, 1900.[2]

Lawrie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1904, shortly after being invalided home in the P. & O. Somalia with an abscessed pelvis. He was finally fit again on 21 October.[3]

Lawrie was appointed in command of the destroyer Ruby on 25 January, 1912.[4]

Lawrie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1912.[5]

Great War

Lawrie commanded the destroyer Mandate when she operated with the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland.[6]

On 20 August 1916, he contracted influenza. Four days in Plymouth hospital made him fit again.[7]

Lawrie was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1916.[8]

On 14 March, 1917 he was hospitalised with bronchitis. He was again found fit on 26 March.[9]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Wrestler on 16 April, 1918.[10] He was informed that he should have been on deck when course was altered when Wrestler collided with the battleship Conqueror.[11]

Post-War

On 12 February, 1920, Lawrie was appointed in command of the destroyer Witherington.[12]

Lawrie was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1923.[13]

Lawrie was appointed in command of the light cruiser Comus in April, 1927.
