Acting Captain Clement Richard Dane (14 September, 1883 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Simla, grandson of Richard Dane, C.B.. Dane could draw fairly well, and knew enough French for it to be worth noting.

Dane would earn a 4th class certificate as an Assistant Surveyor in 1905 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1905.[1]

On 1 Januayr, 1907, he was granted a 3rd class certificate as an Assistant Surveyor.

He was allowed to stay in India for several additional weeks in June of 1907, as he suffered from Dengue Fever. In 1908, he was blamed for a collision with Zebra when in command of T.B. 067, as he was the overtaking ship and had failed to use signals appropriately.[2]

His first command experience was in a pair of torpedo boats, in T.B. 67 from August 1907 and then a year in command of T.B. 113 from December 1908. On 4 January, 1910, he was appointed to the pre-dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Britannia, which would last fully two years, at which time he was appointed in command of the destroyer Locust on 11 January, 1912.[3]

Dane was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1913.

Great War

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Lennox on 28 June, 1914.[4] He was specially mentioned by Commodore Tyrwhitt for his conduct in the action of 17 October, 1914. Dane was provided a letter on vellum which was to be considered equivalent to a mention in despatches.[5]

Dane was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1915.

Dane was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander on 16 December, 1915 and appointed to President for service with the R.N.A.S.. On 6 February, 1916, he was appointed in command of Kingsnorth Airship Station.[6]

On 17 January, 1917 Dane was granted ten days of leave to marry, which he did, to Bessie Albinia Lee Combe, on that day. In February or March, he was chastised for permitting the misuse of a Rover touring car belonging to Kingsnorth and was advised to keep more stringent logs of their operation. He left Kingsnorth when he was appointed in command of the Chingford Air Station on 13 March, 1917.[7]

On 17 November 1917, Dane was appointed in command of the destroyer Lance. He commanded this destroyers through the end of the war, and used her to attack U 108 after she had torpedoed the troopship Barunga on 16 July, 1918. In August, the Admiralty expressed its appreciation for Dane's creditable work in the affair.[8]

Post-War

Dane left Lance when he was appointed in command of the destroyer Nizam on 1 January, 1919.[9] He served in Nizam until 1 November, 1919,[10] and was appointed in command of the destroyer Tempest on 8 January, 1920.[11]

Dane was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 21 November, 1924 and promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 14 September, 1928.

Dane was promoted to the rank of Acting Captain on 10 November, 1939.

World War II

Dane saw service, initially in command of "P.M.Cs.", in September 1939.[12]
