Alexander Hugh Gye

Lieutenant-Commander Alexander Hugh Gye (7 February, 1884 – 21 December, 1916) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

He was awarded the Ryder Memorial Prize for 1903 for placing highest in the examination in French at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Gye was appointed in command of the destroyer Teviot on 24 August, 1912.[1]

Gye was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1914.[2]

On 17 June, 1914, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Lapwing,[3] remaining there when she fought as part of the First Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland,[4] even though he'd been appointed to command the new destroyer Negro in May.[5] He was killed in command on 21 December, when Negro was lost in a collision with Hoste in the North Sea.[6]
