William Archibald Compton Salmond
Lieutenant-Commander William Archibald Compton Salmond, R.N. (5 September, 1890 – 21 March, 1921) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of W. Salmond, Esq., Justice of the Peace entered the Navy as it was transitioning to the new training scheme for cadets and was sent directly to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth as part of the September 1905 intake term.
Salmond was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1912.
Salmond was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1920.
Salmond was appointed in command of the destroyer Sepoy on 9 July, 1918.[1]
In August, 1919, Salmond was appointed in command of the destroyer Whirlwind.[2]
In 1920, Salmond was tried by Court Martial for negligently or by default suffering his ship to be stranded. The charge was proved and he was sentenced to be reprimanded.
Salmond committed suicide, dying from a self-inflicted gunshot on the night of 20-21 March, 1921 aboard H.M.S. Whirlwind. He was buried in Derbyshire.
