We categorize people who were judged, or whom we presume died by their own hand or to have made an attempt to kill themselves based on a rough appreciation of evidence. Many of these men were also judged insane, most often temporarily at the time of their suicide.
We lean toward presumed suicide, as this makes the category more useful in research, even if it ceases to be authoritative. Always read the articles on the men.
In addition to the men in the category, the following people who may not yet have pages were likely suicides:
- Midshipman Roderick Hudson hanged himself in H.M.S. Invincible at Cromarty on 26 September, 1912.
- Lieutenant Edward Louis Delmar Morgan, jumped from topmast of H.M.S. Majestic on 15 August, 1900.
- Lieutenant John Edward Nelson Murdoch, shot self 3 January, 1907 following concussion.
- Lieutenant Harry Beaumont Heygate shot self with revolver on 20 July, 1897.
- Lieutenant Nigel St. John Stradling Nicholl-Carne shot self while of unsound mind c. 17 November, 1911.
