Francis Gerard St. George Brooker
Captain Francis Gerard St. George Brooker, R.N., Retired (20 June, 1871 – 3 September, 1936) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born at Southsea the son of Rear-Admiral George Augustus Cooke Brooker, C.B..
Brooker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 13 November, 1892 and was re-appointed to Forester for navigation duties.
Brooker was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1906.[1]
Around April 1899, Brooker was in a staff appointment at the torpedo training school H.M.S. Defiance when he was hospitalized. At some point, he attempted suicide and was sent to Plymouth Hospital. He was deemed fit on 12 October.
In 1909 when Brooker was in command of T.B. 114 and in command of the Sheerness-Chatham T.B. flotilla, T.B. 072 lost a torpedo and the Admiralty determined that Brooker did not spend enough time in searching for it.
His time in command of H.M.S. Algerine in 1912-13 produced such unharmonious relations between himself and his junior officers that a Court of Enquiry was convened in January 1914, resulting in the finding that Brooker was largely to blame for the issue. He was superseded in December 1913.
On 1 September 1915 he was reported as unfit at Chatham Hospital owing to a nervous breakdown and likely to be unfit for two weeks. He was found fit for employment on shore on 27 October.
On 19 May 1917 he was again exhibiting signs of mental distress at Lord K[illeg] Hospital.
Brooker was retired as unfit with the rank of Captain on 14 November, 1917.
