Commander (retired) Gervase William Heaton Heaton, D.S.O., O.B.E., R.N. (3 March, 1882 – ) served in the Royal Navy. Born as Gervase William Heaton Scrope-Ferrers, he is listed at The National Archives as Gervase William Heaton. That may indeed be his proper, final name.
Life & Career
Born in Brighton, he listed his mother as his guardian upon joining the Navy.
Heaton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1903. He was implicated in the death of a Marine in Formidable when a shackle was carried away, but the fallout for him is not entirely legible in his Service Record.[1]
Heaton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1911. He retired at his own request on 3 March, 1912. On 11 March 1914, he reported the loss of his left hand in a motor accident two months previously, his arm being amputated six inches below the elbow. He said he was doing well, and that it "would not interfere with service afloat." This sounds rosy, indeed.[2]
On 25 february, 1915 he was appointed to Pactolus, additional, for command of a group of paddle sweepers operating out of Bourne. In June 1915, he took this group to The Clyde.[3]
He was granted the acting rank of Commander on 25 August, 1915.[4]
Heaton was promoted to the rank of Commander in recognition of his wartime service, dated 11 November, 1918.[5]
