Herbert Edward Walter Christian Whyte
Commander Herbert Edward Walter Christian Whyte (Retired) (2 September, 1882 – 27 February, 1962)[1] was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Whyte was born in London. He gained three months' time on passing out of Britannia in mid-September 1898 and was appointed to join the battleship Magnificent in the Channel Squadron.
Whyte was specially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1903 for services in South Africa.[2]
Whyte was appointed in command of the destroyer Zebra on 17 June, 1909.[3]
An appointment in command of Dasher for 9 February, 1911[4] was cancelled and Whyte remained in command of Fervent until December, 1912.
Whyte was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1911.[5]
On 18 December, 1912, Whyte left Fervent and was appointed in command of the destroyer Fawn.
On 1 April, 1913, Whyte was appointed to Hindustan as executive officer. Captain John Nicholas felt that Whyte was not a good executive officer, as he was "slow & lacks initiative". Whyte left when appointed to Cæsar on 17 October, 1913 where he served under Captain Edward W. E. Wemyss who had a good impression of Whyte's service.[6]
On 5 June, 1914 Whyte was appointed to Diana. On 25 August, 1914 after two weeks idling in Devonport following a sore throat and neurasthenia, Whyte was appointed to Majestic. On 24 November, he was appointed to President for "Special Service (Coastal Squadron) 3", which might mean work with "Q" ships. In July 1915, an appointment for "Special Service Squadron" was issued.[7]
On 9 September 1915, Whyte was appointed to Majestic as first officer. He remained with her until being appointed in command of the sweeping sloop Magnolia on 16 March, 1916.[8]
Post-War
Whyte was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 June, 1920.
Whyte was promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) on 2 September, 1922.
