Claude Hillersden Woodward
Commander (retired) Claude Hillersden Woodward, R.N. (3 February, 1879 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Meran Meen, East Indies, the son of Colonel W. F. Woodward.
Woodward entered the navy with the January 1893 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia and emerged in December 1894 with seven months' time. He was presently appointed to Barfleur in the Mediterranean, in which he served from March 1895 to mid December 1898, earning positive reports on his performance from Captain Custance which did not inspire his captain to include any detailed notes whatsoever.
He was lent to Mercury for the Annual Manoeuvres of 1899, and at the end of the year was appointed to the destroyer Lightning. After just two months, he was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Furious for six weeks and then to the destroyer Sunfish for a year and a half.
Woodward was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1901 and was re-appointed to Sunfish temporarily in lieu of a sublieutenant. On 1 August, he was appointed to the third class protected cruiser Pegasus in the Mediterranean Fleet.
Woodward was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1909.
From August 1905 to August 1911 he commanded several destroyers, ending in August 1911 after two years in command of Nightingale on the China Station. After some time unemployed, Woodward retired at his own request on 28 February, 1912.
When the war broke out, Woodward was recalled to service, spending most of his time at the Devonport Barracks in a supervisory role that is difficult to read.
He was promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) on 3 February, 1919.
World War II
Woodward was briefly considered for work with the Central Censor at Central "Tele" Office, but he was dropped from the post for his suffering from frequent debilitating headhaches.
