Harry Lumsden Boyle
Captain (retired) Harry Lumsden Boyle, C.B.E. (8 January, 1879 – 7 February, 1955) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Boyle was born in Crieff.
Boyle was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.[1]
Boyle's command, the destroyer Recruit was struck while at anchor in Sheerness Harbour by a barge on 27 April, 1907. Damaged above and below the waterline, she was taken into the steam basin, awaiting her turn in the No. 3 Dock when Ure was undocked on 29 April.[2]
Boyle was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1913.
Boyle was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Adventure on 1 April, 1918.[3] He was appointed Senior Naval Officer, Gibraltar, to be borne on the books of H.M.S. Crescent, on 28 August 1918, and was granted the acting rank of Captain on 14 September 1918, "while holding [his] present appointment and for such time as [he] may be employed on Ocean Convoy Escort duty." Notwithstanding, he continued to serve in the scout cruiser Adventure, being employed after the War as Senior Allied Representative at Smyrna, as evidenced by this quotation:
"... H.M. Ships ... have rendered good service and upheld British prestige. This is particularly the case as regards H.M.S. Adventure (Acting Captain H.C. Boyle) who has been stationnaire at Smyrna during the last four months and who has acted with great discretion in a very delicate situation" (Admiral Calthorpe, "Report on Greek Occupation of Smyrna," 20 May 1919).[4]
Post-War
Boyle was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 8 January, 1925.
