H.M.S. Lightning was one of thirty-six 27 Knotters, early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.
Construction & Service
During trials in the North Sea at the end of 1895, Lightning reached 27.9 knots under forced draught—nine-tenths of a knot over the specified contract speed.[8]
It appears she was to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1901 under the command of Lt. Arthur John Davies, but from the official report on the exercises, it appears that he instead took H.M.S. Kangaroo.[9]
She was one of twenty-seven T.B.Ds. of the Portsmouth Flotilla to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1909.[10]
In August, 1912, she and the other extant 27 knotters were redesignated as "A" Class Destroyers. She was lost to a mine in mid-1915.
In mid-1913, she was at The Nore.[11]
Lightning was mined in the North Sea with the loss of fifteen lives, primarily engine room personnel.[12]
