Charles Herbert Morgan
Vice-Admiral (retired) Charles Herbert Morgan, (16 November, 1865 – 30 May, 1942) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Morgan was born in London, the son of Commander Morgan, Royal Navy.
Morgan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 4 October, 1888.[1]
Morgan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1901.[2]
He was appointed in command of the screw sloop Wildfire on 16 July, 1906 and for duty with the Commander in Chief.[3]
Morgan was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1907 and discharged from Wildfire (now re-named Undine) on 25 July.[4]
Morgan was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Europa in February, 1908.
In June, 1908, Morgan was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Gibraltar.
In August, 1909, Morgan was appointed in command of the battleship Albion.
He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Liverpool in August, 1910.
Morgan was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Ariadne on 1 April, 1912. On 19 September, 1913, he was tried at a Court Martial for stranding Ariadne and sentenced to be reprimanded, a sentence that was noted as being conspicuously lenient.[5]
On 6 December, 1913, he was appointed in command of the battleship Venerable.[6]
Collapse and Australian Service
A telegram was sent in 1914 from the Admiral of 2nd and 3rd Fleets, informing the Admiralty that Morgan had been hospitalised, entering Haslar Hospital on 17 August for a nervous . He was allowed to leave the hospital to "undergo treatment at own risk & expense[,]" being allowed three months for this.
Morgan was placed on the Retired List on 12 January, 1915 as medically unfit. An application to return to the Active List in February was refused. On 26 March, he was offered command of the gunboat Arrow if his health permitted, but this did not come to pass, despite a favourable report from the District Captain, Bristol showed he was proving helpful. It was decided to send him to the Australian Naval College at Jervis Bay. He worked there into 1917.[7]
Retirement
Morgan was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 27 October, 1918.
Morgan was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 19 July, 1924.[8]
