H.M.S. Terrible was one of two Powerful class protected cruisers completed between in the late 1890s.

Service

In early 1913, she was operating with Third Fleet. In July, she was ordered to Pembroke Dock.[8]

In 1920, Terrible replaced Hindostan, 80, as Fisgard III, part of the establishment at Portsmouth for training engine room artificers apprentices.

In 1935, her bell was the oldest and most expensive (at £10) of several ships' bells the Royal Navy offered for sale to officers and men.[9]

Torpedoes

In October 1898, the ship became one of the first in the Royal Navy to receive torpedoes fitted for gyroscopes, drawn from the Portsmouth Depot. Though there were three torpedoes, only two gyros were initially supplied:[10]
