Admiral Arthur William Edward Prothero, Royal Navy, Retired (18 April, 1850 – 1 January, 1931) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

His last name was sometimes offered as Protheroe.[1] His fiery cousin, Reginald Charles Prothero, became a Vice-Admiral.

Early Life & Career

Born in Worcester, Prothero entered the navy on 8 September, 1863.[2]

Prothero was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 28 August, 1873.[3]

In December 1883, he was appointed to Superb for gunnery duties but on 27 March, 1884, he was appointed to Carysfort for passage to Cygnet for garrison duty in Port Said. In April, however he was sent to rejoin Superb. He remained in her until being superseded at his own request on 27 August, 1885.[4]

Prothero was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1886.[5]

Prothero was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1893.[6]

He was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Arrogant in January, 1899.

In January 1901, Prothero became captain of Royal Oak, staying in that role for a year and a half after which he was appointed to Vivid for command of the Devonport Fleet Reserve on 11 July, 1902, and took command of the ancient ironclad battleship Temeraire and Fleet Reserve on 16 July.[7]

Flag Rank

Prothero was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 February, 1905, vice Walker.[8] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, dated 11 July.[9]

Prothero was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 2 December, 1908,[10] and on 20 March, 1913, was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List.[11]
