Charles Gordon Ramsey
Admiral SIR Charles Gordon Ramsey, K.C.B., R.N. (Retired) (4 December, 1882 – 19 December, 1966)[1] was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1904.[2]
Ramsey was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 11 on 28 July, 1908.[3] In 1910, his command Success suffered a grounding at Row, but his Captain (D) determined that Ramsey had anchored properly and had done nothing wrong, ably refloating her.[4]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1912.[5]
Ramsey was appointed in command of the destroyer Manly on 6 November, 1914.[6] On 5 July, 1915, she was grounded. It was determined that Ramsey should have reduced speed upon a mist forming.[7]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.[8]
Ramsey commanded the destroyer Acheron at the Battle of Jutland as part of the First Destroyer Flotilla.[9]
Ramsey was in command of the Pasley on 16 September, 1917 when she rammed and sank the British submarine G 9 in error. Ramsey was superseded in command, but his service record is devoid of any description of the fallout in the affair.[10]
On 3 October, 1917, Ramsey was appointed in command of the destroyer Vendetta.[11] He would be her captain through the end of the war. On 11 February, 1918, Ramsey was prosecuted by a Court Martial on charges that he did negligently or by default strand Vendetta. One of three charges was proved and Ramsey was reprimanded.[12]
Post-War
He was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Vampire on 7 July, 1919.[13]
In August 1921, the United States Shipping Board expressed its satisfaction at Ramey's offer of assistance to S.S. Bellemina (?).[14]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.[15]
On 4 December, 1931, he was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Oak.
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 March, 1934.[16]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 January, 1938.[17]
Ramsey was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 6 April, 1942 and superseded as Commander in Chief, Rosyth by Wilbraham T. R. Ford in mid-April, 1942.[18] However, Ford immediately took ill, requiring Ramsey to return to duty for a short time. On 1 June, 1942, Ford relieved Ramsey for the second and final time.[19]
He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 15 September, 1942. However, in October he was assigned to the Liverpool Convoy Pool, to serve in the rank of Commodore, Second Class R.N.R.. He remained so engaged until 2 May, 1945 and reverted to the Retired List on 14 August, 1945.[20]
