Henry Montagu Doughty

Rear-Admiral Henry Montagu Doughty, C.B., Royal Navy (4 September, 1870 – 1 May, 1921) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

He was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant dated 14 January, 1890.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 14 January, 1892.[2]

On 31 December, 1902 he was promoted to the rank of Commander.[3]

On 30 June, 1908, Doughty was promoted to the rank of Captain.[4]

Doughty was appointed in command of Leviathan and as Flag Captain on 4 January, 1909.[5] He was appointed in command of the cruiser Niobe, and as Flag Captain, on 1 February, 1910.[6] On 12 April he was appointed in command of Sutlej as Flag Captain.[7]

He was appointed in command of Melpomene upon her recommissioning at Portsmouth on 16 January, 1912.[8]

In July 1913, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Hermione, remaining with her until some time in 1914.[9]

Great War

He was again placed in command of Sutlej on 1 December, 1914.[10]

Doughty was appointed in command of Abercrombie to commission the ship on 12 May, 1915.[11]

He also commissioned the new battleship H.M.S. Ramillies in April, 1917[12]

He was appointed command of the battleship Royal Sovereign in July, 1917.[13]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1918.[14]

Flag Rank

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 November, 1919, vice Grant.[15]
