Admiral SIR Allen Thomas Hunt, K.C.B., C.S.I., Royal Navy, Retired (14 February, 1866 – 24 February, 1943) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in London.

Hunt was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in January, 1889.

His command Partridge included a grounding in March, 1900 at ebb tide at a river. He was rebuked for his choice of time to cross that bar.[1]

Hunt was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1900.[2]

The state of Partridge's canteen provoked Their Lordships' displeasure in 1901.[3]

Captain

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1906.[4]

He was appointed command of the second class protected cruiser Fox on 19 May, 1908.[5]

He was appointed a Companion of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.) on 2 January, 1911.[6]

He was was appointed Captain of the armoured cruiser Kent, recommissioning her in Singapore on 23 December, 1911, under orders to return to England.[7]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Neptune on 10 March, 1914.[8]

Great War

Hunt was appointed command of the battleship Temeraire on 8 February, 1915.[9]

He was appointed command of the battleship Royal Sovereign on 3 March, 1916.[10] When the Battle of Jutland was fought at the end of that month, the new ship was left behind to continue training the crew.

Hunt was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 July, 1917, vice Nicholas.[11]

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1918.[12]

Post-War

Hunt was appointed Commander-in-Chief, South America Station on 9 March, 1919,[13] and was received by the King at Buckingham Palace on 31 March that year. He eventually took up the appointment in June.

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 June, 1922, vice Leveson.[14]

Hunt was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on the occasion of the King's birthday on 3 June, 1924.[15] He was placed on the Retired List on 19 July.[16] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 8 November, 1926.[17]
