Admiral SIR Brian Herbert Fairburn Barttelot, K.B.E., C.B., C.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (13 December, 1867 – 4 February, 1942) was an officer of the Royal Navy in the First World War.

Life & Career

Barttelot was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 April, 1889.[1]

Barttelot was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901.[2]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Bullfinch on 24 February, 1902.[3]

Barttelot was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1906[4] and underwent a year of instruction in War Courses as well as in Gunnery and Torpedoes. He was then appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Niobe, as Flag Captain to Rear-Admiral John Denison, Home Fleet, following him when he moved his flag to Leviathan at the end of March. He stayed in this post until January, 1909, when he was superseded. He next spent a year in command of the first class protected cruiser Blenheim, during which time he grounded her through what the Admiralty considered careless navigation. Let off with a warning to be more careful, his time in Blenheim ended on 31 March, 1910.

Following two years in command of the Chatham Gunnery School, Barttelot was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Monmouth on 11 April, 1912.[5]

He was Captain-Superintendent of Contract-Built Ships in the Clyde District from 1914 to 1917.

Barttelot was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1917.[6]

He took command of the battleship Resolution on 1 November, 1917.[7]

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 26 August, 1918, vice Henderson.[8]

Barttelot was appointed Admiral-Superintendent of Malta Dockyard on 1 November, 1918.[9]

On 1 November, 1923 he was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral, vice Oliver, and placed on the Retired List the following day.[10] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1927.[11]

He would remain at work at the Admiralty as Director of Dockyards and Repair until being superseded in March, 1928. He would die in Torquay in 1942.[12]
