Hubert Lynes
Rear-Admiral Hubert Lynes, C.B., C.M.G. (27 November, 1874 – 10 November, 1942) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
He was an expert ornithologist.
Life & Career
The son of Colonel S. P. Lynes, R.H.A..
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 April, 1895.[1]
He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1905.[2]
He was appointed to Venus in the Mediterranean on 1 August, 1905, remaining in her through 23 January, 1908.[3]
He was appointed as captain of Cadmus on the China Station on 24 September, 1910. Leaving her in January, 1912, he took an appointment for work ashore in Hankow on 15 March. He was ordered home on 2 May, 1912.[4]
Lynes was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1911.[5]
He took command of the yacht Enchantress on 9 August, 1912.[6]
Lynes was appointed in command of Sutlej on 1 August, 1914,[7] remaining with her until he was placed in command of Penelope on 1 December to commission the new ship.[8]
As Commodore, he was appointed as Senior Naval Officer, Dunkirk, to help command the Dover Patrol, subordinate to Vice-Admiral Reginald Bacon.[9]
He was appointed in command of the Warspite in May, 1918[10] and was placed on the Retired List on his own request three months later on 14 August.[11]
World War II
Served on Staff of Naval Officer in Charge, Holyhead as Royal Naval Officer, Carnarvon, serving in the rank of Commander on 1 July, 1940.
He was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital, Holyhead in 1942 and was soon placed on the dangerously ill list, dying on 10 November.
