Commander (retired) Henry Dale Gill, O.B.E. (mil) (23 June, 1885 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Brompton, London, the son of Robert T. Gill, Esq., a barrister-at-law.[1]
Gill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1907.[2]
Gill was appointed in command of the submarine B 9 on 1 March, 1910.
His eyesight was poor enough to be described as "failing", but he had superior eyesight when using glasses.
Great War
On 3 August, 1914, Gill was appointed to E 11, second in command to Lieutenant Commander Martin Eric Nasmith. On 14 November, he was appointed to Dolphin, additional, for submarine W 1, to take command upon her commissioning.[3]
Gill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1915.[4]
Gill left W 1 when he was appointed to G 6 on 1 February, 1916, to take command upon her commissioning.[5]
In late December or early 1917, Gill was ordered to Egmont for command of "B" class submarines. Which boats, if any, he commanded is not recorded. He was next appointed to H.M.A.S. Platypus, temporary, on 11 March, 1917.[6]
He was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Thames 20 April, 1917 and for command of the Fifth Submarine Flotilla. On 5 September, 1917, he was appointed to Dolphin for command of the submarine F 2 and for instructional duties.[7]
Gill was again appointed in command of Thames and of a submarine flotilla on 8 October, 1918. It appears that this "flotilla" was actually the new Periscope School being established on the river Clyde.
Interbellum
Gill was awarded a military O.B.E. on 1 April, 1919 for his valuable services as Commanding Officer of the Periscope School.[8]
Gill was appointed to Dolphin for submarines on 7 May, 1919. This lasted only a little over two months when he was lent to the Director of Torpedoes and Mining for instruction in Sound Ranging.[9]
On 2 December, 1919, Gill was ordered to undergo testing for fitness for general service. He apparently failed and was placed on the Retired List as unfit on 8 December, 1919.[10]
He was appointed Superintendent of Gyrocompasses at Malta on 11 December, 1924.
Gill was promoted to the rank of Commander on his fortieth birthday, 23 June, 1925.[11]
Gill was superseded as Superintendent of Gyrocompasses at Malta on 29 August, 1926.
World War II
In March, 1939, Gill was called to Slough for a course in compasses. On 28 August, 1939 he was appointed to President, additional, for duty with Director of Compass Department at Slough. He was released in July 1945 and reverted to the Retired List in late August, 1945.[12]
