H.M.S. W 1 was one of four "W" class submarines built by Armstrong, Whitworth & Company given to Italy in August, 1916.
Service
Transferred to the Regia Marina on 23 August, 1916.[7]

- Lieutenant-Commander Henry D. Gill, 14 November, 1914[8] – 1 February, 1916[9]
- Lieutenant in Command Henry G. Higgins, 1 February, 1916[10] – 21 August, 1916[11] (hereafter, transferred to Italy)
