Fitzroy Hamilton Dalrymple Byron
Captain (retired) Fitzroy Hamilton Dalrymple Byron (22 July, 1885 – 18 December, 1952) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
On 30 March 1906, Byron was appointed to Thames for instruction in submarines.[1]
Byron was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1907.[2]
Byron was appointed to Mercury for command of submarines on 10 November, 1908. As was often the case, however, the submarine commands he held in this appointment are not spelled out in his service record, though another source suggests that he commanded A 12 for much of this period until he was re-appointed for command of C 18 on 12 July, 1909. A mere three days later, he moved over to become Lieutenant & Commander of C 17. This command would last until 27 September, 1913.[3]
Great War
Byron was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1915.[4]
In December, 1916, the Admiralty expressed its appreciation of the "very satisfactory manner in wh. he carried out duties in Russian Waters" during October and November 1916. In November, 1917, he was mentioned in despatches in recognition of his "long and arduous services in command of an oversea submarine during the third period of the war."[5]
Byron was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1918.[6]
He was admitted to Granton Hospital on 29 November, 1918 with influenza. He was discharged to duty on 28 December.[7]
Interbellum
Byron was loaned to the R.A.N. on 24 April, 1922. He reverted to the Royal Navy on 1 July, 1922.[8]
Byron received a series of appointments in command of "L" class submarines, some of which were still being constructed. These tasks finally ended in May 1925.[9]
He was appointed to Malcolm for command of a group of destroyers in reserve on 4 January, 1926 and was superseded on 2 November 1926.
Following a final appointment in Malcolm from 13 January 1931 to 11 April, Byron was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 29 July, 1931.[10]
World War II
Between 1939 and 1944, Byron served as Naval Chief Staff Officer in Gibraltar, Milford Haven, Bangor and in the Mediterranean.[11]
He reverted to the Retired List on 12 June, 1946.[12]
