Commander (retired) George Augustus Saltren-Willett, Royal Navy (16 October, 1885 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

In 1903, Saltren-Willett was recommended for his proficiency in navigation.

On 14 July 1905 he was invalided with Mediterranean Fever. He was not fit until 29 November after spending time in Osborne Convalescent Home.[1]

Saltren-Willett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1907.[2]

In February, 1911 he was granted permission to study German in his own time. However, on 12 August, 1912 he asked that his name be removed from those being considered for examination as a German Interpreter.[3]

Saltren-Willett was appointed in command of the submarine C 4 on 15 October, 1912. He left the submarine on the cusp of war on 2 June, 1914 when he received an appointment to join the battleship Marlborough. Saltren-Willett asked to return to submarine service on 26 February, 1915. He was finally appointed to Maidstone for submarines after fifteen months in Marlborough, on 1 September 1915. On 21 December, his tasking became more specific, as he was appointed in command of D 6. Saltren-Willett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1915. On 7 March, 1916, he was sent to Portsmouth, and five days later was appointed into the Minotaur Class armoured cruiser Shannon.[4]

Time in Shannon amounted to just three months, and Saltren-Willett was appointed in command of Hebe and in command of her submarine flotilla on 20 June, 1916.[5]

On 5 September 1917 he damaged Hebe's propeller.

Post-War

On 9 November, 1918 he was appointed to Amethyst, becoming her first and gunnery officer upon her commissioning. On 23 June, 1919 he was appointed to join Royal Oak. He would served in her until 1 August, 1921.[6]

On 5 February, 1924, Saltren-Willett was placed in charge of a Photographic School at Excellent. He was superseded there on 8 November, 1926.[7]

Saltren-Willett was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 30 April, 1927.[8]

World War II

By age fifty-five, Saltren-Willett required eyeglasses, and this restricted him to office work. In 1938, he may have worked for the Air Ministry.

Saltren-Willett was appointed to work with the Commander-in-Chief, Western Approaches on 4 December, 1940. His remaining appointments are obscured by torn pages in his service record, but they appear to be shore-based. One may have been as a liaison officer with the Department of Labour in India in connection with the handling of dangerous cargoes. His work seems to end in February, 1945.[9]
