H.M.S. Renown was the lead ship in her class of "large light cruisers", which were essentially battlecruisers.
Construction & Service
Renown was completed with her main battery director in place, but had her secondary battery director system installed in October, 1916 — one month after she entered service.[7]
Renown was completed in September, 1916, too late to participate in the Battle of Jutland. She never saw combat in the war, though her sister H.M.S. Repulse fought in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight.
Renown paid off at Portsmouth on 1 November, 1920.[8]
Paid off into Dockyard Control on 19 July, 1923.[9]
She re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 2 September, 1926 for service with the Battle Cruiser Squadron supporting the Atlantic Fleet.[10]
Completed to full complement at Portsmouth on 7 June, 1929.[11]
She re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 9 June, 1932.[12]
Renown paid off into Dockyard Control on 2 September, 1936.[13]
