Admiral of the Fleet SIR Rhoderick Robert McGrigor, G.C.B., D.S.C. (12 April, 1893 – 3 December, 1959) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Colonel Charles McGrigor, C.B. of the King's Royal Rifles passed out of the Training Establishment on 15 September, 1910 and was appointed to the battleship H.M.S. Dreadnought. He left the ship upon her paying off on 27 March 1911 and spent six months in the battleship Formidable of the Atlantic Fleet.[1]

McGrigor received the Beaufort and Wharton Testimonial for the year 1913.[2]

McGrigor was serving in the destroyer Foxhound at the outbreak of war. He was promoted in her to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1914 and left her when he was appointed to the new battleship Malaya on 8 December, 1915. He fought in her at the Battle of Jutland.[3]

Leaving Malaya in September 1917, McGrigor attended the Long Torpedo Course at H.M.S. Vernon. He emerged in June 1918 with a first-class certificate in torpedoes and was appointed to Conqueror for torpedo duties on 7 June, 1918.[4]

McGrigor was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1922 shortly after being admitted to Haslar Hospital with bronchial catarrh.[5]

McGrigor was blamed for a collision between Thisbe and Ulster in 1924, as he had left an inexperienced acting Sub-Lieutenant in charge without adequate supervision.[6]

McGrigor was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1927.[7]

McGrigor was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1933.[8]

World War II

McGrigor was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 July, 1941.[9]

McGrigor served as Flag officer, Sicily from 14 July 1943, and then in October became Flag Officer Liaison, Italy in succession to Vice-Admiral A. J. Power. He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 April, 1945.[10]

McGrigor was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 2 September, 1948.[11]

McGrigor was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet on 1 May, 1953. He was placed on half pay on 29 June, 1955.[12]
