William Edward Parry
Admiral SIR William Edward Parry, K.C.B., R.N. (8 April, 1893 – 21 August, 1972) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of F. S. Parry, Esq., the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Customs.
Parry was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1914. Early in the war, he served in the armoured cruiser Warrior. He was sent to Vernon for a six month torpedo course on 1 December 1915. Later in the war, he spent four months as torpedo officer in the battleship Prince of Wales.[1]
Parry was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1922.[2]
Parry was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1927.[3]
Parry was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1934.[4]
World War II
On 27 January 1939 he was appointed to assume command of the light cruiser H.M.N.Z.S. Achilles upon her recommissioning, vice Glennie. He would serve as Commander-in-Chief of the New Zealand Division, and would command Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate in December. Parry was wounded in the legs during the action.
Parry was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 January, 1944.[5]
Parry was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 4 January, 1948.[6]
Parry was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 1 May, 1951. He was placed on the Retired List on 26 January, 1952.[7]
