John Duncan Campbell
Captain John Duncan Campbell, D.S.C., O.B.E., R.N., Retired (6 September, 1886 – ) served in the Royal Navy. He would come to specialise in mine clearance and control.
Life & Career
Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on the Supplementary List on 1 September, 1913.[1]
When war broke out, he was in an appointment in the scout cruiser Blanche of the Home Fleet, to which he'd been appoointed on 1 April, 1914. On 3 December 1916, he was appointed in command of the sweeping sloop Iris. He remained in her until December 1918, when he was appointed Assistant Mine Clearing Officer in Mine Clearance Area I. On 15 October, 1919, he was appointed in command of the minesweeper Cattistock.[2]
Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 September, 1921.[3]
Post-War
In 1920, he was faulted in a collision between Cherwell and S.S. Logie(?). In 1921, Cherwell and Waterhen found a drifting German mine, and Campbell's action in dealing with the hazard reflected great credit upon him.[4]
Campbell was placed on the Retired List on account of age with the rank of Commander on 6 September, 1931.[5]
World War II
In 1938, he volunteered for service in connection with controlled minefields. He spent a few months in command of the paddle minesweeper H.M.S. Whippingham, then in 1939 was taken up on his original offer, and was sent to Malta to serve in the rank of Lt. Cdr..[6]
He commanded Manchester City vice Smyth, from about April, 1944.
He was granted the War Service Rank of Captain in 1945.[7]
