H.M.S. Waterhen was one of twenty-one "W" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1917-18.

Service

Waterhen was re-commissioned on 1 July, 1918.[8]

She was re-commissioned at Chatham on 6 June, 1924 to serve with Mediterranean.[9]

Re-commissioned at the Nore on 25 January, 1927 to serve first with the First Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean, but with transferred to the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic by early 1929.[10]

Waterhen was paid off into Dockyard Control at Sheerness on 8 May, 1929 and remained there until being re-commissioned on 21 November for work with the First Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Stephen Harry Tolson Arliss.[11]

She re-commissioned into Reserve at Devonport on 30 November, 1932.[12]

The destroyer was one of five R.N. vessels that were transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1933. She paid off at Portsmouth and re-commissioned as H.M.A.S. Waterhen on 11 October 1933.
