Completed: 1879
Sold: 1897

H.M. T.B. 5 was one of 19 first-class torpedo boats of the T.B. 1 class.

Service

On 22 May, 1879, T.B. 5 made what was then the fastest passage on record, travelling from Portsmouth harbour to Plymouth in twelve hours over smooth seas under command of Lieutenant Roxby of the Bacchante despite some fog slowing the early portion of the trip. The mean speed worked out as 18 knots. Five tons of coal were aboard, being consumed at a rate of eight hundredweight an hour.[4]

During the crisis following the Panjdeh Incident in 1885, T.B. 5 was put into commission as part of Admiral Phipps Hornby's Particular Service Squadron on 28 April, and was later involved in the year's Annual Manoeuvres at Berehaven.[5]

Commissioned as tender to Valorous in May 1886 for flotilla manoeuvres.[6][7]

In 1895, she was one of four torpedo boats of less than 125 feet in length and thirteen longer ones stationed in Devonport.[8]

T.B. 5 was sold at Devonport, presumably for scrap, in 1897, although her engine was retained for use at Devonport Dockyard.[9]
