H.M. T.B. 3 was one of 19 first-class torpedo boats of the T.B. 1 class.

Service

A serious accident occurred aboard T.B. 3 on the afternoon of 5 April, 1880. During tests of the evaporative capacity of the boiler one of boiler's tubes burst. The men in the stokehold cleared out quickly, and there were no injuries. Early estimates suggested repairs would take about a month.[5]

In 1881, there were twenty T.B.s in all; T.B. 3 was one of eleven boats serving out of Portsmouth.[6]

During the crisis following the Panjdeh Incident in 1885, T.B. 3 was put into commission as part of Admiral Phipps Hornby's Particular Service Squadron on 28 April, and was later involved in the year's Annual Manoeuvres at Berehaven.[7]

Commissioned as tender to Valorous in May 1886 for flotilla manoeuvres.[8][9]

In 1895, she was one of four first-class torpedo boats of less than 125 feet in length stationed in Portsmouth alongside twenty-three larger torpedo boats.[10]

By early 1900 T.B. 3 had been assigned as a tender to the torpedo training school Vernon.[11] She was sold for scrapping at some point between January 1904 and November 1905.[12][13]
