Edward Chicheley Thornton

Captain Edward Chicheley Thornton, D.S.C., R.N., (19 September, 1889 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in County Cork, the son of Lt. Col. R. C. Thornton.

Thornton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1912.[1]

Thornton was appointed to Grasshopper as first lieutenant on 28 March, 1914.[2]

On 22 October, 1915, Thornton was appointed from Grasshopper to Marksman, to assume gunnery duties upon her commissioning.[3]

In 1917 he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Silver Medal for saving life at sea.

Thornton was appointed in command of the destroyer Romola on 28 January, 1918.[4]

Thornton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1920.[5]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Raider on 23 July, 1920.[6]

Thornton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1925.[7]

On 1 September, 1932, Thornton was appointed to oversee the completion of the new flotilla leader Duncan, and to take command upon her commissioning. In April, 1933, he took the new ship down to Malta, where he was superseded.[8]

Thornton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1933.[9]

On 2 April, 1936 he was appointed in command of the sloop Milford.[10]

In February, 1938 he was appointed in command of the destroyer tender Woolwich.
