The Newman Memorial Prize was an annual award of "books, scientific instruments, etc.", which was conferred on the Officer R.N., qualifying for Engineering duty, who scored highest in the Examination in Practical Engineering held on the completion of his original course of specialising in Engineering.

The prize was endowed by the interest earned by a Fund of about 400 pounds established in memory of the late Mr. Edward Newman, R.N., who died whilst serving as Chief Engineer of Portsmouth Royal Dockyard.[1]

Recipients

In 1939, an asterisk appearing after the name of an Engineer Officer in the Navy List indicated that he had won the award. N.B.: an asterisk after the name of an officer in the Military Branch indicated he had won the Beaufort Testimonial prior to creation of the Wharton Testimonial, and an asterisk after a Medical Officer indicated he had won the Gilbert Blane Medal.[2]
