H.M.S. Lightning was one of thirty-six 27 Knotters, early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.
Construction & Service
During trials in the North Sea at the end of 1895, Lightning reached 27.9 knots under forced draught—nine-tenths of a knot over the specified contract speed.[8]
She was one of twenty-seven T.B.Ds. of the Portsmouth Flotilla to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1909.[9]
In August, 1912, she and the other extant 27 knotters were redesignated as "A" Class Destroyers. She was lost to a mine in mid-1915.
In mid-1913, she was at The Nore.[10]
Lightning was mined in the North Sea with the loss of fifteen lives, primarily engine room personnel.[11]
