H.M.S. Wizard was one of thirty-six 27 Knotters, a broad meta-class of early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.
She was one of the few early destroyers who served throughout the Great War, as most were sold or broke up before it started.
Construction & Service
In 1901, Wizard collided with the tug Malta due to an error in judgement of Gunner-in-Command John William Renshaw.
Wizard collided with Starfish on 3 February 1903. A Court of Enquiry found that the Lieutenant-in-Command of Wizard, Myburgh, had displayed a want of judgement in the moment.[7]
In late 1905, she was one of eight destroyers in the First Division of the Channel Fleet's Destroyer Flotilla.[8]
In mid-1913, at Portsmouth.[9]
She was the only destroyer built with in-turning screws, an unfortunate innovation that rendered her nearly uncontrollable in any harbour or riverine manoeuvring where one screw might have to be reversed. Lieutenant Lionel George Dawson was in command for just one week and had no difficulty getting into two docking accidents.[10]
