H.M.S. Vancouver was one of twenty-five "V" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1917-18. She was renamed H.M.S. Vimy on 1 April, 1928[6] when H.M.S. Toreador was being renamed H.M.C.S. Vancouver upon her transfer to the Royal Canadian Navy.
Service
Vancouver re-commissioned on 3 December, 1918.[7]
She was re-commissioned on 3 May, 1923. By March 1925, she was with First Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic.[8]
She re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 7 January, 1926 for service with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic, where she operated under the command of James Chaigneau Colvill.[9]
The ship was re-commissioned as H.M.S. Vimy on 4 September, 1928.[10] Toreador took up her old name at the same time.
Re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 11 November, 1930 for work wuth the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla in the Atlantic Fleet,[11] remaining so deployed until at least early 1933.[12]
In 1934, her bell, inscribed Vimy, was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at the price of £5 or perhaps £1. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[13]
Vimy transferred to the Reserve Fleet at Portsmouth on 11 October, 1934.[14]
She was transferred to the Reserve Fleet at Portsmouth on 6 August, 1936.[15]
