Hubert Stanley Braddyll

Commander Hubert Stanley Braddyll (25 August, 1886 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy during the Great War.

Life & Career

Born in Toxteth Park, Liverpool.

On 17 June, 1907, he was appointed to the battleship Vengeance of the Channel Squadron.

Braddyll was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1907. In 1908, he offered an unsatisfactory explanation for irregularities found in mess accounts in Vengeance. Things hardly improved when Braddyll was reported on 2 October as "having no sense of responsibilities, thrice logged recently as having been censured for neglect of duty & generally inefficient & unfit for position as a Lieut. T.L. severe displeasure expressed."

On 6 February, 1911 Braddyll was hospitalised for adenoids. He was found fit on Valentine's Day.

Braddyll was appointed in command of the destroyer Osprey on 8 February, 1913. At the end of that year, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Crane.

Braddyll was appointed in command of the "C" Class destroyer Flirt on 2 February, 1914. In March, he received a possibly delayed notation scolding him for a collision between Crane and a coal hulk. A final inspection of Crane revealed a "want of supervision in details as if personal attention of C.O. had not been given."

Great War

Braddyll was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1915.

Following the loss on 17 January 1916 of the trawler Fulmar to a mine in the Mediterranean along with fifteen lives, Braddyll as captain of the sweeping sloop Mimosa was blamed for not having taken steps to warn patrols of mine hazards.

Appointed to Hannibal on 4 February, 1916, Braddyll undertook some travel to Port Said and then to Basra before returning to Port Said in March. On 20 April, he was appointed in command of a ship whose name is illegible by the Senior Naval Officer, Port Said. This appointment ended on 5 June, 1916 and Braddyll was sent back to England on 9 June. On 14 July, 1916 he was appointed in command of the destroyer Mohawk.

Braddyll commanded the destroyer Mohawk at the Battle of Dover Strait on the night of 26-27 October, 1916.

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Moorsom on 31 January, 1917. This appointment would last beyond the end of hostilities.

Interbellum

On 19 February, 1919, Braddyll was appointed in command of the destroyer Winchelsea.

On 5 November, 1919, he was found to be at fault when he grounded Winchelsea.

As loving as they are, on 9 September 1920, Braddyll's aunt sent a letter to the King inquiring if Hubert might be promoted to the rank of Commander. She was informed that such advancement was offered to those officers so selected.

Braddyll was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 27 February, 1927.

World War II

On 2 June 1938, Braddyll was deemed fit for service except for his eyesight being poor.

On 27 August, 1939, he was appointed to President III, additional, for D.E.M.S. Instructional Staff in Liverpool. He reverted to the Retired List on 2 November, 1940.
