Arthur Ronald Mawson Black
Commander Arthur Ronald Mawson Black, (5 December, 1899 – 22 April, 1951) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Boston, Lincolnshire,[1] the son of A. S. Black, Esq., a farmer.[2]
Black passed out of the Training Establishment on 1 July 1915 and was appointed to the battleship Orion. On 1 April 1918 he was appointed to Vernon to take a twelve day course in Torpedo Control. He then served in the P36 from 13 April to 19 September, 1918 when he was appointed to Dolphin for instruction in submarines.[3]
Black was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1919, adjusted from 15 August.[4]
Though he would never command a submarine, his appointments in them included the captured U 112 in late December 1918, G 12 in March of 1919, and H 25 in mid 1920. In March 1921 he was diagnosed with syphilis at Haslar Hospital and declared no longer fit for service in submarines.[5]
Black was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1927.[6]
Loaned to Royal Australian Navy for two years, from 3 September, 1927.[7]
Black reverted to the Royal Navy on 29 December, 1929.[8]
World War II
Black was promoted to the rank of Commander on 5 December, 1944.[9]
