H.M. T.B. 77 (1885) | |
---|---|
Builder: | Yarrow & Company[1] |
Ordered: | 30/31 March, 1885[2] |
Launched: | 1885[3] |
Completed: | August 1886[4] |
Sold: | 27 March, 1920[5] |
H.M. T.B. 77 was one of 53 first-class torpedo boats of the 125 Footer class.
Service
An engine telegraph malfunction caused T.B. 63 to collide with T.B. 77 as the former boat was getting underway in Sheerness Harbour on 5 July 1888. When the Lieutenant in charge of 63 gave the order from the bridge to go astern, the remote telegraph indicated "Full speed ahead", and 63 leapt forward with much gusto and struck 77 with such effect that the latter had difficulty remaining afloat. A Court of Inquiry was to be held to probe this misadventure.[6]
T.B. 77 collided with and sank her sister T.B. 75 on 8 August, 1892 during operations in the Maidens.[7]
She commissioned on 18 July to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1894 as one of three boats in the Kingstown Division of the Blue Side.[8]
In 1895, she was one of twenty-three torpedo boats of at least 125 feet in length stationed in Portsmouth along with four smaller ones.[9]
She was commissioned on 8 July 1896 in order to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1896.
She was reboilered during 1905, and was recommissioned at Sheerness on July 1 with a nucleus crew.[10]
Around 1906-1907, with the issuance of torpedo boat numbers to the first of the Cricket class torpedo boats, the existing Torpedo Boats numbered 25 to 79 had a "0" prepended to their number. This vessel, therefore, became T.B. 077.[11]
She was damaged through grounding under the command of Gunner James Hill in April, 1912.
Sold to Stanlee of Dover on 27 March, 1920.[12]
