Lieutenant-Commander Victor Herbert Gascoigne, (20 November, 1879 – 25 January, 1926) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Herbert Gascoigne, a Clerk in Holy Orders.[1]

Gascoigne was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1901.[2]

Late in an appointment as Lieutenant (G) to Essex which commenced in September, 1904, Gascoigne would find himself in serious trouble. In March of 1906, Captain Farquhar had to curtail Gascoigne's wine bill for four months for his own health. He was logged on 11 March for not returning to his ship. He was removed from Essex and sent to Excellent for two and a half months to re-qualify in gunnery. There were confidential reports indicating that he should not retain his credentials as a gunnery lieutenant, and so it was decided to remove him from the list of gunnery specialists and place him on Half Pay.[3]

Gascoigne was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 July, 1909. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 27 July 1909.[4]

Gascoigne was called back to serve in the Great War, being appointed to Tamar, additional, for charge of Stonecutter's Island Wireless Station. On 18 December 1916 he was tried by Court Martial on two charges of negligent performance of duties and for fraudulent conversion of public money. He was sentenced to a further loss of two years' seniority and to be dismissed the ship. The Admiralty chose not to uphold the finding on the third charge, and his loss of seniority was reduced to a single year, it now being 15 July 1910.[5]

He died of stomach cancer in 1926.[6]
