H.M. T.B. 72 was one of 53 first-class torpedo boats of the 125 Footer class.

Construction & Service

T.B. 72 was one of the first Yarrow 125 footers to be completed, being ready for trials in July 1886.[6]

When commissioned for service during the Annual Manoeuvres of 1887 she was commanded by future First Sea Lord Charles Madden, then a junior Lieutenant.[7]

In 1891, she was attached to the Medway Steam Reserve for instructional purposes. On 28 April she broke her propeller while exercising between the Nore light vessel and the Essex coast, totally disabling her. The tugboat Locust came to bring her back to Sheerness Harbour, and it was decided that she should be taken to Chatham Royal Dockyard for repair.[8]

She commissioned on 18 July to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1894 as leader of the Piel Division of the Blue Side.[9]

In 1895, she was one of eight large torpedo boats of at least 125 feet length and two smaller ones stationed in Chatham.[10] She participated in the 1895 Naval Manoeuvres, but on their conclusion had to remain in Pembroke along with T.B. 95 and "it was anticipated that quite three weeks would elapse before they would be ready to proceed."[11]

She was placed into Dockyard Reserve at Chatham. In mid-1901, she was to be fitted with Thornycroft water-tube boilers, manufactured at the dockyard.[12]

Around 1906-1907, with the issuance of torpedo boat numbers to the first of the Cricket class torpedo boats, the existing Torpedo Boats numbered 25 to 79 had a "0" prepended to their number. This vessel, therefore, became T.B. 072.[13]

Though not listed as being extant in Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships, 1906-1922, Lyon and Winfield's Steam and Sail List reports her being sold for scrapping to Ward, Rainham on 19 December, 1919.[14][15]
