H.M.S. Tarpon was one of sixty-two "R" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1916-17.
Service
In May, 1917, Tarpon was assigned to the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla.[8] She suffered a prolonged disappearance from the Navy List from August 1917 until March, 1918 when she was placed in the new Twentieth Destroyer Flotilla operating out of the Humber.[9]
On 15 June 1918, the destroyer collided with Immingham dock while under the command of Lt. Francis Ernest Wright. A Court of Enquiry convened on 30 July determined that Wright should exercise greater care in future. He remained in command until January, 1921.[10] The was re-commissioned on 1 February, 1920, tender to Vernon.[11]
She completed to Special Complement on 14 September, 1923.[12]
In December, 1925, Lt. Cdr. Waight elicited severe displeasure from the Admiralty after Tarpon caused damage to a private craft by its wash, owing to excessive speed.[13]
Following an earlier round which included a flotilla leader and seventeen destroyers, Tarpon was named as one of an additional fifteen destroyers to be scrapped in the fiscal year starting 1 April, 1926.[14]
